“I booked a private car — and a taxi showed up?”
It's a fair question, and we'd rather address it honestly before you arrive than explain it after. This isn't a misunderstanding, and it isn't a bait-and-switch. It's simply the reality of Japan's remote islands.
Here's everything you need to know before booking island transportation in Okinawa.
What Vehicles Are Actually Legal on Japan's Remote Islands
In Japan, any vehicle that charges passengers for transportation must hold a green commercial plate (営業ナンバー). This is Japanese law — not something we decide.
On Okinawa's main island, green-plate vehicles include taxis, buses, and various charter vehicles, giving passengers a wide range of options. But on remote islands like Ishigaki and Miyako, the situation is very different. With populations of around 50,000 each, the market simply can't support a fleet of luxury vehicles. On these islands, licensed passenger vehicles are almost exclusively taxis.
That means: no stretch limousines, no Mercedes V-Class fleets, no luxury MPV services — not because we don't want to offer them, but because they don't exist on the island.
Photos of “luxury island charters” you might find online are typically taken on the main island or elsewhere. They don't reflect what's available on Ishigaki or Miyako.
What We Arrange for You
We do our best to arrange more professional-looking vehicles — ideally black cab-style taxis where available. In practice, the specific vehicle depends on what's available on the day.
What we can guarantee, regardless of vehicle type:
- Fully licensed: Every vehicle holds a valid green commercial plate. No unlicensed operators.
- Professional drivers: Local drivers who know the island, its roads, and its quirks.
- Flight tracking: We monitor your flight in real time. Early arrival or delay — your driver adjusts.
- Private, not shared: The vehicle is yours alone. No strangers, no sharing.
- Language support: We handle communication so you don't have to.
So What's the Difference Between This and Just Hailing a Taxi?
On the surface, yes — it's the same vehicle. But the service is completely different.
- Hailing a taxi: You find one yourself, hope the driver speaks enough English, figure out the delay yourself if your flight is late, and compete with every other passenger who just landed.
- Our service: Pre-arranged pickup, real-time flight tracking, waiting time included, English communication handled, itinerary flexible.
During peak season — especially on cruise ship arrival days in Ishigaki and Miyako — taxis disappear from the port within minutes. Pre-booking means you step off the ship and your driver is already there.
Main Island vs. Remote Island: A Real Difference
If you've used a private car service on Okinawa's main island before, you may have experienced a wider range of vehicles — minivans, business sedans, larger options. That's a fair comparison, but it's also an unfair one.
The main island has over a million residents and a robust transportation industry. Ishigaki and Miyako have a fraction of that. The vehicle inventory reflects the island's size — not the quality of the service.
What to Expect
We'd rather you arrive with the right expectations:
- ✅ Safe, legal, professional transportation
- ✅ A driver who will wait for you, track your flight, and be there when you land
- ✅ Private service with English support
- ❌ Luxury European vehicles — these don't exist on the islands
- ❌ The same range of options as the main island
What the islands do offer is something no luxury vehicle can provide: water so clear it doesn't look real, bridges that seem to float above the ocean, and sunsets that make you forget what time it is. The car is just how you get there.
